Tribal tattoos may look like modern designs, but in truth they are the oldest tattoo designs in history. These tattoos have passed from many ancient civilizations. As the name implies, they first came from some ethnic tribes. Today, tribal tattoos are very popular because many actors, musicians and sports figures are wearing them. For instance, Angelina Jolie is sporting one on her belly and Mike Tyson also has a tribal tattoo on the face.

Years before, tribal tattoos are more significant then they are now today. These tattoos are rites to obtain adulthood in a lot of tribes in the past. In other groups, a woman who could not stand the pain of the tattoo needle is said to be fragile and will probably remain single because she will not be able to tolerate the pain of childbirth. In the case of a man, he is said to be a coward and not capable of hunting.

New Zealand tribes take so much pride in their tattoos. The higher the rank in the tribe, the more elaborate and complicated the tattoos you wear. Tribes in Hawaii use tattoos as symbols. They have a strong belief in tattoo gods and will pray to them first before getting a tattoo. Polynesian tattoos are pioneers of the modern ones. James Cook, a sea explorer who landed in the islands of Polynesia travelled back to England with his men sporting various tribal tattoos that are curiously very similar to the neo-tribal designs these days.
